I have noticed that with my model 1 xts 3000 that depending on the direction I turn with it in my turnout gear, either i can hear someone on the radio I can see or cannot...its sort of like depending on which way the radio is oriented to the person talking to me effects the reception of my xts. any ideas? thanks! -tnf

Sure, everything from the your physical location, how your body absorbs/blocks the signal, the receiving signal level, affects the way a radio receives its signal.
If you know the signal you are listening is far away, then it's fading and multipath effects that causes the varying signal level, if you are standing next to the transmitter and still gets reception problem, then you should look into the hardware side of the radio for any malfunctions

Thats why people buy public safety microphones with the antenna on top.

Since he's a firefighter, he can be like some of the ham's I saw out in Dayton, and integrate an antenna into his helmet! LOL

thanks for the replys! That makes a lot of sense, and I guess I never really considered why the speaker mic's had antennas....this is actually my personal radio and just happen to have it in my turn out gear that day, and usually use our kenwood tk-380's, so an antenna in my helmet, no matter now cool it sounds, probably wont happen...
if it is a hardware problem, is there anything I can do to text/fix it?
and hopefully I will make it out to hamfest this year!!
thanks again! -tnf

"What's that thick, black goo on your helmet?"
"Oh... that was my helmet-mounted antenna."

man, sounds like a good place to work
If you think your radio is defective, I would take it to some radio shop and have professionals check it out. A simple test is take another radio, set it on same frequency, and see if it receives equally well. It could be just as simple as different squelch settings.
