XTVA overheating?

Post by DES-AJ »

Hi guys I have an XTVA NTN8560A open face with HHCH and during use the radio (XTS3000 Model 3 Rugged) and battery (RNN4007AR IS Cert) get very hot after only an hour of use, this is just sitting on my desk on a cool day... I'd hate to think what its like in the boot of a car on a hot day... Melted XTS time

Just wandering if any other XTVA users encounter the same problem? I'm thinking of installing a fan or something on it.

I have had it shutdown and start to flash orange after three hours of use.

Did you check to make sure your XTVA will charge the type of battery that is on your radio? Also, check the contacts on the XTVA and the battery. You might want to check the voltage on the battery just to make sure it dosen't have a bad cell. Thats where I would start.

Of all the XTVAs I've installed I've never seen one get hot.

Yeah I've tried three diff types of the same battery, the manuel lists the make of battery as supported.

I'll check the voltage and contacts on both and post back my findings

Thanks for the post

xtva overheating

Post by misawatech »

Are you using the standard antenna or do you have it connected to a mobile antenna mounted outside? If it is connected to a mobile antenna you should also have an adapter between the normal antenna and the radio. This, to my knowledge, is used to disconnect the normal antenna connection and use the mobile antenna connected to the xtva.

As we all know antenna connections get extremely hot so this might be causing your entire radio to get hot as well as drawing too much current and forcing the battery to overcharge.

Just my thoughts. I've installed a few of these, not by choice, and know there are alot of things to consider.

Yeah the radio in the XTVA has an RFPA adaptor between the connector and antenna... I'm using another XTS with earlier firmware believe it or not and so far it's working fine... maybe an issue with the other XTS?

Still looking into it...

Are you using the same battery on the second radio? My manual for the xtva and the one on I found on MOL do not list that battery as recommended. The largest battery they list is 1700mah where yours looks like it is 3500. Is it possible that yours is too big for the xtva??

I'm trying to find updated documents but no luck so far. THe last one of these I installed only lasted 3 months. Not due to failure but because the new user did not like it. He wanted a mobile install.

I was also thinking there may be some corrosion or problems with your original radios accessory connector???

All my batteries are 7.5V 3500mAh IS cert NIMH Motorola OEM (Not cheap eBay copies) their Kit number is RNN4007AR they are an alternative (As written on the battery shell) to an NTN8299A-B. (NTN8299 1650 mAh Ultra High Capacity Nimh is listed in the manuel on page 1 as being supported) it is possible that the double capacity in the newer motorola batteries is a problem in an XTVA (This XTVA is an A revision).

Corrosion on the radio's connector isn't possible, the cases were changed not long ago and the XTVA is brand new, thanks for the thoughts though I appreciate it... I might try and nut down a cheap low capacity OEM XTS battery and see what happens with that... I have an aftermarket NIMH low capacity battery that I could put the radio in whilst monitoring it... So far the heat doesn't seem like that much of a problem, but it sitting in a car on a hot day is what I'm thinking of ahead of time.
