Maxtracs With Voice Inversion or Encryrtion Boards???

Post by BearMan »

Received 3 Maxtracs off Ebay and they all sounded garble with other radios. After inspection they all had option boards installed. When I snipped the wires off they all had no TX or RX audio until I resoldered the breaks where the wires were installed. They work fine now but what are the little boards anyway and are they of any value to sell on Ebay? They have Median stamped on the boards. There is 1 IC and a crystal that reads D357A4. Just wondering if anyone would have real knowledge of these units and be so kind to share the info. Thank you kindly.

Appears to be speech inversion boards, does it sound like Single Side Band when you talk on the radio with the option board?

Voice Inversion Scramblers

Post by BearMan »

Thank you for the message. They are Vocie Inversion Scramblers and these are model VPU-8 and the ones in Midian Electronics catalog are VPU-12 but look the same. Maybe the VPU-12 is a little newer? The cost is $112 new. The only problem that I have is that it didn't seem there was a way to switch back and forth just in case you wanted to talk to other units without the Voice Inversion units?
Thank you

I've seen a few of these in person as well as eBay. One of the tell-tale signs of them is a small silver metal switch that is drilled into the front grill or the side somewhere.
