HT1550 XLS & DTMF Volume Too Loud

While transmitting DTMF tones from the "hot keypad" of my HT1550 XLS, the "sidetone" volume of the tones is obnoxiously loud compared to receive audio. Is there some way to adjust this?

You can set alert tones in the CPS to remain at a specific level, or follow the volume control. I don't have the CPS in front of me, but I believe there's an "alert" tab in the radio configuration field.

Wavetar is correct, it is in the Radio Configuration Menu under Alert Tones. Mine was the same way out of the box, uncheck Alert Tone Fixed Volume and Alert Tone Constant Boost and set the Alert Tone Volume Offset to -10 or what or level suits your ears and the Alert Tones will follow the volume control.

Whether I set "Alert Tone Volume Offset" to +50 or -50, the volume of the DTMF tones is unaffected. Only the volume of the power on tone and key presses and the like are changed. Any other ideas?

the dtmf part he is trying to use isn't an alert tone, those settings won't affect it. if you are using the dtmf pad to direct call then the sounds absolutely have to be present, that's what's being transmitted.

I understand that the tones must be present in the transmission, but do they need to be so loud from my local speaker?

(I use DTMF to talk to a repeater controller.)

The tones may not be connected internaly, ie the mic may be picking up the tones from the speaker rather than modultaing internaly.

Nope, definitely generated internally. I grabbed a unit & confirmed that the DTMF side tones simply follow the volume switch, and are unaffected by the alert settings (that's what I get for answering without testing). I guess you'll have to turn them down manually.
