First off, like escomm said, turn the charger over and see what firmware revision the charger was shipped with. It should look vaugely like the sticker in the first pic in this thread:

http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?t=67549

That will go a long way towards answering the question, why do you need it updated, and in fact tell you if you DO need it updated. The word on the street is you only need the latest and greatest v3.4 if you need to charge XTS2500 batteries. Anything older than that and you can get by on v3.3. However if it's significantly older than that then yes, you're going to want an upgrade.

Spectra God upgraded my single unit charger from v3.0 to v3.4 for me and he had a fast turn around. He's also very trustworthy.

If you pay the shipping both ways, I can do it.

The only real advantage to going above 3.1 is for Li-ion batteries.
Ver 3.0 had bugs in it, so best to upgarde if you have 3.0.

I have a motorola WPLN4114AR charger.. Sticker says Ver 1.20 as best I can read it.. There is something written in pen that I cannot read, but do not think it is related to Ver #..

I have a new NiMh WPNN4013A battery am told I need a firmware update to allow proper charging of this battery.. I can find precious little info and the Motorola shops I spoke to never heard of updating chargers....

I did send a PM to spectragod in response to an old post.. I have not heard from yet, too soon..

If anyone can perform this service or knows where I can have the upgrade done, please let me know

Thanks

You do not need an upgrade to charge a non-Impres NiMH battery.

Escomm,
Please bear with me as I am new to these more modern devices, I am from the T-51, T-Power, MOTRAC era... I have done quite a bit of reading of conflicting info regarding Moto chargers & what is appropiate for each type of battery..

My new Battery has a label on the box with red X stating which chargers to NOT use with the WPNN4013A NiMh battery.. The battery label itself has a list of approved chargers.. So far I have not been ale to find any of the acceptable chargers..

I have only the WPLN4114AR desk charger (Ver 1.02) and a RLN4884A mobile charger.. I am supposed to have a NTN8831A on the way... I have a NiCd NTN7144CR battery in addition to the WPNN4013A high capacity NiMh one..

I do not know if I will get an Impres battery in the future, but it seems that Ver 1.02 would be older than NiMh technology which is why I was following the advice of others in seeking an upgrade.... I was led to believe that I need an upgrade to a ver which is programmed for NiMh batteries..

Main thing is I want to get the best performance from the batteries and do not want to harm them with incorrect or inefficient charging..

Please help me to sort this out...

Thanks for your patience and help
Jerry

Those part numbers on the WPNN4013 batteries are the slow-rate NiCD-only chargers that Motorola sold before rapid charging technology evolved to the point of being an industry standard. NiMH batteries on slow rate chargers do not mix (although it's possible-- I do not recommend it). In any event, those chargers listed on the battery box will cook the NiMH battery but you don't need to worry about with the Impres charger because it's a rapid charger.

1.02 is not older than NiMH and the charger firmware is there to interact with the Impres batteries. I would of course recommend the charger be upgraded to V3.40, but it's not essential. The travel charger will handle NiMH batteries just fine as will the NTN8831 (the correct part number for this kit is NTN1667, NTN8831 is the charging shoe only and does not incorporate the power supply)

I hate to resurrect old threads but I have a single bay impress charger here someone sent me with my XTS2500 which has v3.0 underneath but is LiOn Impress and is reporting correctly (seemably at least) to the radio. Would this suggest an upgrade has been done or just an oddity? If the impress battery is reporting to the radio is there any real reason to look for an upgrade?
