Does anyone know what model antenna this is? I'm pretty sure that Motorola sold it. I need another one as this one is pretty bad off. The radial is thick and that antenna is very wide banded. Thank you in advance.

it looks like motorolas vhf wideband unity gain? put it on a vhf radio with a wattmeter and see if it has any rejection.

It is a motorola wideband. Anetnna specialists made them for M years ago. I have one in my Garage.

mine is stamped Motorola on the base. The only problem I ever had with them is the plastic threads strip after a few uses

This antenna has been a very good antenna and I didn't want to replace it with a standard 1/4 wave. They just seem too flemsy for my tastes and they aren't as wide-banded as this one.

I'm gonna look into the AS model. Hopefully they changed the plastic mount as that is the only thing I don't like about it.

Go to Tessco and search on "NMOWBQB"... that's a wideband RadiallLarsen antenna. Same construction, available in black or chrome, with no plastic threads to strip and no spring-loaded pin to fail.

AS did redesign the base,it now looks like an AS coil base......I prefered the nylon original!

I've been using a few of the Comtelco A1511A, same design, rated for a 24 mhz split for VHF. I have nothing but good things to say about these antennas. They have worked great, I plan on switching my UHF's over soon.

Have many of these in use on our squad cars, fire department vehicles and public works trucks. Take a severe beating and don't break off in the car wash.

Correct, Comtelco A1511A is a MUCH BETTER antenna than the old A/S.. We use lots of them and no problems.


FYI, the old A/S antenna requires their antenna mount and cable to be broadband. The instructions make that very clear... Kind of like the old CB days, cable length is cut to make up for the mismatch in the antenna....

I had one of those some years back.

One night as I'm driving down the road at, oh, maybe 75 or so, a bird flew right over my car...and the antenna chopped it in half.

Poor bird.


Tiny feathers stuck to the antenna but it didn't even put the tiniest bend
in the antenna.


They make good weapons. Yours may be bad, but you can save it for
fencing practice.

Will,no disrespect intended......I never saw any docs on the cable length needing to be anything specific.I have been using this antenna for 30 plus years on 144-174 and also 420-512.
The tessco part number I gave is for antenna only,no cable,I opened a package and read everything....no reference to cable lengh.
I always bird it on lowest and highest freq(if the reflected is lower on the lowest freq,the whip needs to be lowered(shortened)
They always tuned up for me.

I now have a brand new one of these. The old one still worked, but was on the verge of breaking.

Looks as if there is some truth to this statement as the antenna cable that came with the antenna (TAD6290B) has a label that states, "DO NOT ALTER CABLE LENGTH".

When you state 24 mhz Bandwidth split on VHF does that mean the antenna will work as well with good SWR at 155 with 24 mhz split either way?

So I can use this antenna just as good on ham?

Is there any difference compared to the never let me down Antennex 1/4 wave 19" whip compared to these comtelco antennas.

I used the one I had from 136-151 and it had a very low SWR across the whole span. It came from a police agency that used 155.xxx, so I was planning on adjusting it. When I hooked up the meter, the SWR was already low, so I left it alone.

I think it has a lot to do with how thick the whip is. It's not the standard thin-whip that you see on so many 1/4 wave antennas.

I have the new AS design on my Cherokee roof. It is with a 50W RF amp on my saber III. I cant say enough good about it. The only time it comes off is for a car wash.

First, the acceptable range would be 24 mhz TOTAL spread. Ie: 155 + 12 and -12 = 143 to 167...on a good day. The AS is rated at 2 to 1 SWR over this range, Comtelco 1.5 :1.

Second, there is NO comparison.....

i use the comtelco version myself and thats the only 1/4 wave i offer i found the comtelco one looks better abd better built that the larsen or the a/s i haved used that both on vhf and UHF they do need a little trim job and they can take a smash
