ASTRO software VER 9.0

Am I the only one having fun with the new 9.0 Astro software. The scenario. In the beginning I tried to program an XTS 5000 with a serial cable, factory model. The radio would read the old codeplug without problems. In trying to program a new codeplug into the radio, it gave me a 01/82 fail. More than several attempts with the old codeplug, the new code plug, still 01/82. Called Motorola, they advised me to send the radio to the depot. Radio was shipped, and was returned with the wrong flashcode. Radio was sent back to the depot, and was returned with the correct flashcode. In the interim, spoke to several people at Motorola regarding this problem. They advised me to try a USB cable if I was having a problem with the serial cable. In the meantime, I got another factory serial cable, tried to read several other XTS 5000 radios and got the same 01/82 error. With these other radios at least I was able to remove the error and reprogram them with a USB cable. With the first radio that was sent to the depot, I tried to read the codeplug with the USB cable it stated a communication error. Checked all connections, COM ports, etc. nothing. Called Motorola they said do you have another XTS 5000 that you can read. Yes same problem. Motorola advised me to try the serial cable. It read the radio perfectly. In proceeding to write the new codeplug to the radio, got another error there was a different option than what was in the codeplug than the radio. Checked the flashcode from the radio and the codeplug to be programmed, exactly the same. Another call to Motorola. They advised that when they do a firmware up-grade sometimes there is a mis-match between what the old codeplug had and the new firmware. OK. He suggested that I drop-and-drag the old codeplug to the new codeplug that was in the radio when it came back from the depot, and see if that corrects the problem. I did that then tried to program the radio, oh no the dreaded 01/82 AGAIN. Here we go again. Tried the USB cable several times, then the serial cable. After 5 time the radio finally took it and works just fine. I never had this problem with the 8.0 software. Sorry for the long speech, but it should not be that difficult. I have been programming radios long enough. I think I should open up a case with Motorola regarding this. Comments.

The new ver of Astro25 CPS is R9.01.02. I have not had any of the problems as you are describing. I use both USB, and RS232 cables (OEM, and one aftermarket) but USB most of the time. I'm running XP Pro.

I have seen trunking radios trying to affiliate right after programming and this has been know to cause some problems with the USB cable. I saw that discussed here long before Motorola would admit that was a problem.

Please keep us up to date on what you find out.

Jim.

Motorola support contacted me. Stated that usually it was on the read side that people we having problems with. They stated that alot was from not having both mobile and portable the same 9.0 version because of the file sharing, but that was not the case in this situation. Further, they stated that I should try the new 09.01.01 and I thought I heard him to say 09.01.02 now, and see if this gets rid of the problem and they will re-open the case if necessary. Sounds to me like there might be a fix in the new version to which they just cannot say. Will have to wait till Motorola ships the new software to me since a 100meg file is a little much for dial-up and parts is not shipping the new version as of yet.
