P1225 charger issue

I've occasionally had a small problem with my P1225 charger. I'm using the rapid charger base, with the OEM power pack, and have had this problem with both OEM batteries, and aftermarket. The battery sometimes gets extremly hot while in the charger, almost too hot to hold, and the indicator LED on the charging base will slowly flash red over and over, and every now and then, will cycle from red to amber to green, as it does when first plugged in. The radio is always off when in the charger. If I remove the radio and let it cool down, I can put it back in the charger, and all is normal. I have had this problem maybe three times in the last 5 or 6 years. It kinda worries me, as I'm afraid it may become a fire hazard. Any ideas?

You didn't state what the model number of your charger is, but if it's an HTN 9040 or HTN9042A it's uP controlled. Sounds like you might have some dirt or corrosion on the contact that mates with the battery thermistor contact. You might try cleaning all of them and applying a contact enhancer or ProGold(and the battery contacts too!). Otherwise, replacement might be the best solution because the problem appears to be intermittent.

Al, I don't know the model number off hand. I'll try to post it later. I do, however, know that it's not µP controlled. It's got a few transistors, a few resistors, and a few caps (all SMD, of course) on the board, and that's all.
