My rescue squad just got 3 XTL 2500's, had them installed, and now one of them attempts to power up, defaults to an FL 95/03
shuts down, attempts to power up again, defaults to FL 94/50
then repeats the cycle. I checked the Spectra error codes and there are no codes that resemble these (at least on batlabs). Also, the drawer is super hot. I have not verified this yet, a few of my members told me about it. Just trying to get an idea what I'm walking in to. I'll post more once I see it for myself, but any ideas on what to look for would be appreciated.

Those are odd codes... maybe someone with a service manual can look them up.

Yeah, those codes are odd, and are not listed in the basic service manual dated 6/06.

My guess is that it has to do with incompatibility of control head. There have been a number of problems with XTLs and the O- series heads; I'm not familiar with all of the details, but believe that one or more SRMs are out on the subject.

OK, my engineer has a bad memory. The correct error codes are

50/94

and 01/90

I already know from experience that 01/90 is one of Motorola's oh-:o codes. Even the secretary girl at the radio shop said "ohhhh, that's not good". I just can;t figure out what the 50/94 is.

Look into FSB10082 - It seems that may be the problem. Sorry I cant get you the text as I do not have MOL access. Perhaps another person on here can post it.

Its possible that whom ever installed those radios may have mixed up the control heads and if there is a firmware incompatability between the head and chasis it causes comm problems from the head to chasis.

NOTE: I am assuming they are remote head mounts.

It is a remote head, but the radio worked fine for about 2 weeks, then after 2 weeks, the radio would key up for a couple of seconds, then reset. Now it's in the endless self check cycle.

FL 01/90 means the control head cannot communicate with the radio itself. This most often is a problem with the control cable, as there's numerous ways it could've been pinched, cut, etc. It can also mean the main radio isn't powered, so a fuse could be blown, or a bad connection in the power wiring. Lastly, there could be an actual hardware issue in either the control head or main radio in which case a trip to the depot is in order. The other error code isn't shown in the 2500 manual (or any other, for that matter).

I have an error code written into my tech manual that Motorola for some reason chose not to publish. I had to find this one out the hard way!

Error code 05-94 = Control head/remote base mismatch

In other words, when you purchase a remote mount, the control head and the remote mount adapter on the control head are married!

If you were to remove the remote head adapter from one control head, and place it onto another control head, then odds are it will not work. However, it is possible to successfully convert a remote mount to a dash mount with no problems. On top of that, there are certain VERSIONS of control head adapter that only work with certain versions of firmware in the radio itself. Motorola went out of their way to make this “easy”.

If you are writing this in your books, Motorola has classified this the error-type of FATAL!

The only corrective action is to place the original adapter on the radio.

Also, if the deck is hot, and suddenly stopped working, ensure that none of the speaker lines are going to ground. There is about 8 volts on BOTH sides of the speaker. this will cause the audio amp to over heat, and fry the radio.
