XTS5k Unmuting Problems

I've got an XTS5k VHF M2 that doesn't seem to want to unmute on an active channel.

All tones are set right, squelch has been set to "1", and the un-muting rules are right. When a strong signal on frequency comes up, the LED will flash, but I won't hear any audio unless I press the side button (monitor). Same goes with WX channels, programmed at CSQ, and even then I still have to do this. (WX channels are almost full quieting). This only happens on some frequencies, namely with PL tones. I've heard that this radio can be finnicky with PL tones in that it's got a really tight tolerance on them. Either it's that or im doing something wrong in the CPS. (R 09).

Any suggestions/ideas?

Thanks -

R

My XTS5K VHF is very sensitive to PL tones, one particular repeater won't unmute at all, setting the RX to CSQ and it unmutes fine. After looking at the output of the repeater on a service monitor, the PL tone was almost 120Hz off.

I have one posistion of the A/B/C switch set to selected channel CSQ, and that won't even un-mute the WX channels! But, some repeaters, even far away, on a PL, come in just fine. :-?

I have a VHF XTS2500 that acts the exact same way. Mebey it's just the repeaters in my area, or I'm doing something wrong in the CPS. (?). They will talk to my GP300's, PR400's, Spectras, etc with no problem at all back and forth.

Try looking at the companding (?) or hearclear options and see if they are checked. When I got my 5k, one or both where check off in each personaility, and RX really sucked..big time. I was very disapointed in the radio.

Once I unchecked them, RX came in very nicely. Very easy option to overlook.

I see RX emphasis checked? Should I uncheck that? I do see hearclear, but that is not checked.

RX emphasis should be left on. What firmware revision? There's a FSB out for PL decode problems on an R08 firmware rev (search for it).

Are these channels programmed for MDC signalling?

They all have MDC Signalling, and a few are MDC TX, the rest are just programmed for MDC calling, etc, without the option of having an ID transmitted.

That is your problem, In your conventional personalities, under the MDC tab, change the selective call unmute type from AND to OR. Its right under selective call decode.

I had the same problem not long ago. It drove me nuts until I figured out it was in the MDC and/or settings.

I bet that is your problem Ray.

Yep, that was it. What a :o.

Still turns out that the County repeater must have a bad PL board/reed in it or whatever; I can't get that thing to unmute worth a darned no matter how many times I key it up or recieve traffic on it.

Thanks guys, problem solved!

Now, one more question. Is MDC ID Decode Display a flash option, or does it come with the standard conventional package?
