I picked up several motorola xtn radios and they make no sound. I have tried an ear phone just in case it was a speaker, but no sound there either. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

Are you certain that there is something to be heard on the
channels your radio is set up for? The newer radios don't have
an external squelch control, and if they have a monitor button
the radio might be set for silent monitor which means you don't
hear the usual noise when the squelch is opened. The weather
channels are a good place to go for testing.
More info and we'll all try to help.

I reset them all to the factory defaults and tried tranmitting to each other. The led shows traffic, but no sound and they also don't beep at turn on.

When the LED shows traffic but no sound it usually means
that the receiver is set to an incorrect PL or DPL code. I
don't know exactly how the XTN radio is set up, however,
so you might want to double check the PL/DPL settings and
turn them off for both transmit and receive if you can.
As far as a beep on start up I haven't a clue; on some units
that feature, if you call it a feature, can also be turned off.

It's not the pl. They are all set to the default frequencies and pl and still no go.

You will have to replace the speaker mic, ACCY, jack.
Try a speaker mic first.....

Yeah, it's gotta be an actual speaker problem. If by XTN you mean the XU Series of radios (XU2100, VX2100, XV/U 2600, etc), they do not have a "silent" option with no tones. At least the fleat of ones that I maintained never did.
