On the saber IE, there is what seems to be a button on top of the zone switch. What is this, and what does it do?

That is the "Emergency" button. When pressed the transmitter keys up the un-keys repeatedly. IF MDC1200 is optioned in the radio ID and emergency tag would be sent.
