Dig this
Radio is a high power vhf mcs2000, model 2.
Enc board is a hln6576b (des-xl 3 day)
I enabled encrytion (xl hybrid present) in the software, and installed the module.
I get key fail on the display (as I should)
When I try to load a key, the kvl goes immediately to fail.
Thoughts?

Hi Seth,
The MCS2000 encryption modules have an anti-tamper feature which is a push button switch on the board that needs to be depressed or it will never retain key. Did you use the special shield kit from Motorola when you installed the module??? If you did not then more than likely thats the issue. Hope this helps......

special shield kit? I thought the case pushed own on the little popple thingy.
I did try depressing it while trying to load a key though.

Motorola make a sheild kit that depress the button switch when installed properly over the module. When you loaded key with the button depressed did it work???

Sounds like a firmware/UCM mismatch. Either the UCM or radio may have old firmware causeing this problem.
I've seen this with the Astro line a few times so far - usually the radio is the one with the old firmware.
Try again and again to load the leys. It took me 20-30 attempt before I got one key to load in a 3K M3. Usually it would fail immediately, other times it would get past the initilization, but fail when the KVL showed " 1 to 1 ".

the radio is only few years old, so I don't think it's a radio issue. (I'll check the firmware ver later today)
When I depressed the poppel thing, it had the exact same problem.

Had the exact same problem with an MTS2000. I gave up after I destroyed a DES module trying to bypass the popple.
