Hello all
I just bought a CDM1550 LS+ (160 Conventional modes) and was just wondering what you guys thought about the radio's internal speaker ? I am going to be mounting it in a diesel truck, and was wondering if I should upgrade to the external speaker or not ? Also, would you guys perfer this radio over a Spectra ? I've owned many spectras but this is my frist leap onto the newer CDM series radios.
Any comments would be helpfull.
Thanks !

the spectra is a hard radio to beat but the cdm's aren't too shabby either, they do alot of options right out of the box and i think they are real decent for their price. i'd go with an external speaker just for the fact you can mount it on the side of the cab real close to your ear and you don't have to turn it up as much. plus it will sound better than the internal speaker.

Definitely go with an external speaker...part# FSN5510A plugs right in as it comes wired with the 16-pin connector. The radio can do many things most Spectras cannot, as far as features, so they are great in that aspect. However, they are not the same tier of radio, so performance-wise the Spectra beats in in every aspect. It's still a good radio though.

HSN8145 is a comparable speaker to the one Todd mentioned and it's a few dollars less.
I wonder what the difference is between the two?
FWIW, the 13w speaker is p/n RSN4001

I have about a dozen mounted in both ambulances and fire trucks using the built in speakers. They work alright, but the external speaker is well worth the investment.
In regards to the comparison between the Spectras and the CDM's. In their time, the Spectras were the radios to have. Today other than the need for encryption, the CDM's are the way to go, for the price. There are other higher tier radios you can get, but when you come right down to it, the CDM's work as well as the others. They just don't have the ability to handle Motorola encryption schemes, or P25.
