vhf maratrac question

I just acquired a vhf maratrac (T73XTA7TA7BK) which works fine except for one minor problem. The radio works just fine above 146 mhz (transmit) in that I can set the power level down to 65 watts and it is good. BUT, when I go below 146 mhz the power control circuit seems to quit as the radio immediately to to max power out (100 watts +). I thought the radio was A 144-174 Mhz radio or did I get some bad info? If it is a 144-174 radio do I have a problem with the power control circuitry or is it normal operation?

It's a 146-174 radio. That is normal. You can put a manual power control pot, look for the mods for the Maxtrac, the logic board is almost the same.

Next question then. If I were to do the range mod mentioned for the cps to make it think the radio was low split would it make any difference (by doing a full retune per the board replacement menu option) or does it require the proper logic board too?

Alternatively, if you have the Software That Should Remain Nameless, you can blank and reinitialize the logic board to be 136-162, reprogram, and perform an alignment. That'll get your power levels under control with no hardware mods.
Happy tweaking.

its been a long time since i fooled with a maratrac, i recall that we used to cloan another maratrac that had the correct freq range and it would stay that way. i don't have a code plug but someone else might. olepro
