The 3000R Cases are made for pirates... but seriously, from what I've seen the 3000 and 3000R cases are interchangeable, the 3000R is the ruggedized case, and the 3000 is the regular case.

when you say the 3000R is the ruggedized i work out doors in a housing complex will it stand up to more abuse (I.E rain, snow ect?)

the case is the same but the backplate is different.
If you have a proper R version radio with all the R parts then yes it will make a difference.
The front housing is identical, the seals are the same but the R ghives the option of testing the seals to make sure the radio is waterproof.

If you are buying a housing, just make sure you got the right revision because the flex connector on the back is different. Check out batdude's guide on XTS3K and AS for details.
