Batboard

I am working on plans to build a custom radio console in my office at the firehouse. It will be fitted into a corner under an existing shelf. I would like to make it from wood and possibly laminate the face. I need some ideas on construction, as I am not a cabinetmaker, but so posess some very basic skills.

I will be flush mounting a BC890 Scanner, Maxtrac radio, minitor III amp charger and installing 2 volume knobs for speakers and several switches to operate bells and strobes (cut off switches) that are ties to the radio.

Any suggestions on materials, mounting ideas control knobs etc.?

I am fond of using Birch plywood with a couple coats of varathane for the cabinet, and aluminum for the switch panels.
You could also use MDF for the cabinet.

If you want to think modular, look at building something like a chest of drawers, with each radio mounted thru the front of the
drawer. Think along the lines of a card cage..

I'll second using MDF. Anyone can work with that stuff (even me), and with varnish it's very durable and actually comes up really nicely.
