I was thinking about the red batteries on the HT1550's and the FPP option on the ASTRO25 portables. My question is, why is the FPP so tightly controlled on the XTS', but on the HT line, it seems that it's a little more out there for the taking if you will. I know the FPP option can only do conventional channels, so why is it so hard to find it/get?

who said it can only do conventional? it does digital too... not trunking tho...

you can change... Zone Name, Channel Name, Rx Freq, Tx Freq, Rx PL, Tx PL, Rx DPL (inv), Tx DPL (inv), Bandwidth, Rx Mode (analog/digital/mixed), and Tx Mode (analog/digital).

limited to 240 channels, per FCC (i was told).. and with some options a key is requred, some flashport options allow programming without key. the later is marked as a Federal flash option in the software.

Red Battery of HT1550 only can allow you to change frequencies and PL/DPL only, others you need to do it in CPS.
But FPP in ASTRO can do more but also cannot add/delete channels or MDC etc., you still do it in CPS.

So basically the only difference is you pay to have a flashport option, instead of just picking up a battery?

if your needs are for a higher-end radio to have FPP, then the XTS is your answer.. there is no "Red Battery" for XTS portables, like the HT1550... they do have a Key that is attached to the accy port for programming, or with certain options, no key is needed.

the ht-1550 has some fpp options, but its more of a pain to use.. the XTS series fpp is truly a radio with the ability to edit and change things.. not add or delete, but edit and change... its stuck at 240 channels on my model, and those 240 channels are all editable.. you can change many options of the channel including the name... the HT-1550 is limited to frequency and pl/dpl, etc...

price is also an issue, the HT1550 is much cheaper than a XTS-2500 or XTS-5000 with FPP... list on these items are quite pricey, im goign to say more than $2000. i think list on a HT1550 is more like just past $1000, although im not exactly sure about the prices...
