Astro25 Portable CPS - Clone Express question

Post by Wicho »

So, I've watched the tutorials, searched the CPS help files, but...can't find the info I want.

Does anyone know if it's safe to use Clone Express to clone a Q52/53 XTS5K codeplug into an XTS5K that does not have Q52/53? I really don't want to do a bunch of re-typing.

I'm using CPS 9.0 just because I'm still not sure if it's safe to use CPS 10.0.0 and not lose FPP with a Q52/53 radio.

Thanks in advance,
Wicho.

I believe the question should be "will it clone (at all)?" The only difference between "Clone Express" and "Clone" is that express preserves the IDs in the target radio (and gives you a nice printout of your accomplishment).

As for the "whether it will clone (at all)" question, I haven't a clue. But I think it is safe enough to try it, since if the codeplugs are too incompatible to clone, the software will intercept the clone attempt and tell you that it has be aborted.

Here's a question? Do you loose flash code options like FPP when you change/upgrade programming CPS versions??

It won't work. To use clone express the feature set & model number must match. You can do drag & drop, but you will get a bunch of errors you'll have to fix. It's a real pain trying to move stuff between FPP & non-FPP radios, or even two different FPP radios that aren't identical.

Hmmm...that settles it, I'm going back to my FRS radios.

Well, I'm bummed. What if I were to create a pick list, save it, and then pick off it after opening the second, non-FPP radio's codeplug? My only concern here is what would happen if I alter the pick list at a later date.

I've never used the pick-list feature. Does it reside in the CPS or does it stay with the codeplug, meaning does it go away when you open a new codeplug?

What the problem is that with an FPP radio each channel has it's own, unique personality. When you drag-n-drop that zone into your non-FPP radio you will get an error for each channel in the zone. Let's say you drag zone 3 from your FPP radio into your non-FPP radio, those channels from the FPP radio will be associated with personalities 33-48. Chances are personalities 33-48 in the other codeplug don't exist. You will have to go into each channel & associate it with a personality that does exist. Still easier than programming a complete codeplug from scratch, but a pain none the less.

A picklist disappears when the CPS is exited unless it has been saved to disk, in which case it resides on the computer being used. If a channel is exported from a picklist to a slot in the zone screen, it defaults to Personality #1, requiring that you change the personality assignment to what it should be.

In my experience, picklists do not save all that much time, since you have to export each channel to the radio one-at-a-time. What it does save, I suppose, is some typographical errors and some data lookups.

Why don't you persevere with drag and drop? You can copy personalities, whole zones, scan lists, etc... If you do them in the right order it you can avoid most of the invalid field errors. Best thing since sliced bread in my book.

I don't think he's going to want to drop & drag 240 personalities from his FPP codeplug to his non-FPP codeplug. Ordinarily drag-n-drop is great, but in this instance there is no easy way to do this. Still, drag, drop, & fix will still be easier than typing in 240 channels from scratch.

I agree on the drag and drop - I'll be trying that tonight when I get home.

The clone express did not work. Dammit.

I think Akardam needs to write a software utility... 8)
