Wierd P1225 problem has me stumped!?!?

Post by jdcadc »

Ok, I have a just gotten several p1225s and as I was going through them to check batteries programming etc.. I powered one up and it would not receive from another radio and it would key up on its own. I took the chassis out of the case to take look at it and everything seemed fine. So I hooked up the spkr and mic without attaching the front case and put the ant back on the chassis and powered it up with the front case off....worked perfect. So I figure it is possibly the PTT on the case. I took it apart and checked it out, seemed fine. Put it back together and it did it again. I have a bricked radio that I took apart and swapped the front case, worked fine with front off but did it again when the front was put back on. I checked the PTT button alignment and it was fine not touching anything. It will do this only with the front case on and it doesn't matter what case but with the case off it works fine. And I should add that the light does not work with the top case on and it works fine with the case off. Would there be some kind of short that is happening through the front case causing this? Can anyone help with ideas or things to try??

Does sound like a ground or bad joint somewhere...

Take a lens and examine the connections and the board, looking for corrosion or 'suspicious' solder joints behind the ptt, etc. May be a bent something or other shorting out against something, or just need a reflow of some solder.
