SAM + QUANTAR = HELP

Anyone dealt with this?
specifically, i want to:
turn on / off analog repeat (leave digital up) using MDC and/or DTMF commands
turn on / off the entire station (knockdown) using MDC and/or DTMF commands
would prefer a combination of both, i.e. MDC Unit ID XXXX + DTMF code 123*# = command, etc.
this is a standalone UHF station that will be sitting on top of a 1600 ft tower, platform mounted....100ft hardline run, no duplexer ---- "it gets out reeeeeel gud"
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm looking for a similar solution (but we're only at 1280'

).
In the interim, we have programmed it as analog-only and used the MPL list as described in other forum topics. Apparently MPL is not compatible with mixed mode....
Anyone???

Guys,
I have been searching high and low for these answers. No one on the planet has a clue how to program these stupis SAMS. I called motorola, and half the people you talk to in the quantar division don't even know what a SAM is.
PLEASE, I need to do exactly what doug needs to do, but can't get the thing to work. I beg, If someone has a definitive idead or instructions, or manual, Pleas psot it. It well help out tremendously. Thanks, Rob

I would say the only person I know of on the board that would have an idea about this would be xmo. He knows these units inside and out. He's given me a huge amount of help in the past using the wildcard tables and such. Hopefully he can take a look at this and give you guys some insight!!

SAM [and wildcard] configuration programming is a lot more like computer programming than it is like radio programming. To program a radio you decide what frequencies. PL'S, and features you want and put them into the right places in the RSS / CPS.
To set up SAM and/or wildcard you have to think in completely different terms. You have to use boolean operations such as "AND", "OR", etc.
There have been some observations that you can't get Motorola to help with these complex station programming situations. So? You can buy a great set of mechanics tools at Sears but you don't expect them to come over and help you rebuild an engine or transmission. Motorola isn't going to write your SAM or wildcard solution either.
You can hire somebody to rebuild your engine. Likewise, you can pay someone to do your SAM or wildcard programming [e.g. Doug Eaton]
Alternatively, you can sit down with the tools [RSS / CPS], resources [programming manual, help files, application section in the station manual, etc] and learn how to do it yourself.
Review the printed examples and the provided defaults and example files. Get the station, test radios, service monitor, computer, cables, etc. together in the shop. Start by programming the provided examples. See how they work. Make some simple changes. Work your way up from there until you can make the station do what you want it to.

XMO,
Thank you for the reply, I have some observations and questions.
Maybe I am specifically looking for the list of commands, and the programming manual part# for the SAM.
Would it be out of the questions to share a working codeplug of a sam and or wild card if someone has one that does set up and knock down?
Thanks, Rob

Unfortunately the only SAM manual is the User Reference Manual that came with your SAM RSS.
You can also get some insight on the operation of SAM by reading the SAM programming section of an MSF5000 RSS manual.
If someone has programmed a Quantar & SAM to do what you want and they want to send you their codeplug(s), I don't see that as any sort of problem with respect to the board since codeplug requests are acceptable here.

Putting aside any issues that may derive from the fact that you are running this machine in mixed mode:
The back of the big Quantar manual ("Applications") has a lot of useful stuff, including the programming (both Quantar station and SAM card) for repeater enable/disable via SAM and either MDC or DTMF, including RSS screen shots.
