Don't know the definite answer to your question, but I can say I've never been able to get it to work. And yes, the batteries were properly initialized and charged in Impres chargers. Li-ions.

I'm running:
HOST 08.05.01
DSP 08.50.00

on an 8 Meg Model 3 XTS2500.

I get the same info you get on my display - smart batt data not avail.

had a situation like this... put the battery into the impres charger, showed red, removed it, counted to 3, replaced it.. turned to yellow... let it cycle from the yellow to red to green... and put it on the radio, and the guage came back, with the batt info...

It wont work. It will power the radio but it won't provide the gauge or impres info.

Same case if you put an XTS2500 Battery on a pro series (HT1550-XLS etc) it will power the radio but it will not provide battery capacity/condition info.

Does it use the same row of pins as an ht1250. I know there is two rows on the battery

If you peel back the label on an xts2500 battery, it will reveal a second set of pad's, which will then power a ht750/1250/1550.

Keep in mind that doing so will violate warranties and intrinsically safe certifications.
