Can a 1watt HT600 be changed to 4watts, or vice versa? Can this be done through RSS or do you have to dig deeper and do some Hex editing? Also can a HT 600 be used for FRS if the power is lowered or will there be bandwidth problems?
Thanks

i am not sure about the power output being upgradable in the software or hardware, but as for FRS you should have no problem getting a UHF 438-470 radio to do that, i would not worry about putting out 4 watts on FRS, i think that is better anyway to have more power than most other little kids out there, give'em a taste of real motorola quality on the air.

The HT-600's power is a mechanical adjustment inside the radio - not by software. The low power models cannot be adjusted upward by much. The high power units can be detuned by a small amount. The 1 watt versions may go up to 1 1/2 watts be peaking. The high power units may go to 2 watts.

Hi:
To answer your question....If you have a 2 watt HT600, it will always be a 2 watt radio
( period )
The High-Power HT600 have a completely different transmitter design and PC board
to alow for a larger Driver Transistor along
with a heat sink, where the 2 watt radios have a lower performance driver.
A High-Power HT600 will do 5-6 Watts with
ease if you have a good battery. I have seen
most VHF HT600's do 7 Watts, and although it
puts a drain on the battery, it will give you
optimum performance when / if needed.
You can adjust the High-Power radios down
if you desire, but its not recommended.

You should also know that it is ILLEGAL to use ANY radio on FRS channels unless it is designed to be an FRS radio exclusively. You can monitor, but you can't transmit legally with any other type of radio.

Hi Elroy! your right about the law on FRS freqs. But down here in the arizona desert, we have familys using the vhf marine band, (since you have to drive over 50 miles to get to a lake) that use's vhf marine! And you have to be standing in a boat, on the H2O to transmit. But I here husbands, wifes, kids, misc. pd, using the band! As for FRS, My radios are opened up. I'm not gonna run out & buy an FRS radio, to talk on the band! I'll just tune my Alinco, or whatever? in on an FRS freq. (never had to) Frequency spectrem down here is something else! No wonder, all the Major agencies are going to 800 truncking, with a motorola that cost $3,400. per unit! Depending on where you live. I'll bet someone is not gonna let a bandplan go to waste. EX: vhf marine here, just my 2-cents..anyone else out there here radio traffic where it did not belong?.Ed

UNtrue. The first seven channels are for use with GMRS, at up to 5 watts ERP, with the proper ($75) GMRS radio service license. It is, on the otherhand, illegal to transmit on FRS channels 8-14. Those are FRS exclusive.
