Hello All,

I have a Quantar running Mixed Mode Astro CAI/Analog. I am trying to hook up an external DTMF Controller to the CSQ (NO PL TONE) side of the Quantar/Analog. I would like when I punch DTMF they not be retransmitted over the repeater. So CSQ would be the best bet. How would I setup the wireline to just hear csq no pl? Or somewhere in the repeater to get the csq signal to the DTMF Controller?.... I know, the speaker on the front panel does this audio when you press the buttons to CSQ and you can here everything on the input without PL. However, if the repeater goes into power failure (I do not have battery backup), It reverts back to no speaker. I have looked in the service manual and I do not see anything for this in it... Unless I am looking in the wrong place.. Your help would be appreciated.

If you were using an external repeater controller (e.g., Zetron 38M), this would be easy. In such an installation, the Quantar is programmed for "Station" (vs. "Repeater") and CSQ. Audio goes to the controller, which passes it to, and keys, the transmitter, only with valid tone. In the meantime, you tap into the Rx line for your DTMF decoder (setting its impedance high so as not to drag down the line), and all works fine.

In your case, I infer that the Quantar is running on its own internal controller, is programmed "Repeater" and for tone. As a result, nothing passes over the wireline Rx line unless it has tone.

From the hip (which is to say, I'm guessing and haven't tried this to verify it), while leaving the Quantar programmed as such, try tapping discriminator audio via the "Aux Audio Output" (which is defaulted to pin 30 on the 25-pair telco connector) for your DTMF decoder. You may have to create a wildcard table as follows: On Cold Reset or Warm Reset, RXDSC-AUXRX ON.

In theory, discriminator audio (unbalanced) should pass to pin 30 when someone sends valid freq CSQ, even though the receiver is not "qualified" and, therefore, the station does not repeat.

thanks , you are exactly right, If I had a external repeater controller, I would not be able to run mixed mode, unless there is something new I do not know about on the market. Your answer is, What I think I am looking for.. This weekend I will try and get up to the site and try it out. I have a telco connector and I will let you know what happens..
