XTL5000 encryption problems

Post by Twisted_Pear »

I've got an XTL5000 mid-power UHF that when transmitting in encrypted mode will power-cycle. Some frequencies give you about a second or so of transmit and some immediately cause it. The radio recently had its FW upgraded to the newest V9 and that did not change anything. The UCM has the newest FW and is plugged in to the O-head compatible carrier. No change between 5W and 45W. The radio is right out of the box with low use and is still under warranty but I'd rather not send it to the depot.

Any ideas why this could be happening?

are you testing it in the vehicle or on the bench with a good power supply?

It's in a vehicle connected directly to a battery. I thought it may have been a current issue at first as I tested it on the bench and it did the same thing.

I've got a spare carrier I'm going to try. As far as I know the UCM is good.

ETA: Problem stayed with a new carrier.

the reason i was asking is, i have seen some radios installed with the ground wire connected to metal under the dash, but this piece metal was isolated from the chassis of the vehicle. though the radio was grounded through the antenna coax, it caused all kinds of wierd problems after a while.

let us know if it is the carrier board.

The new carrier didn't change anything so the module is next.

I also noticed that the radio operates in digital CSQ or analog CSQ regardless of how the mode is programmed. It TX's the PL or NAC fine though. When I check the module I'll remove all the encryption equipment and and see if it still reacts the same way. I could swear that it didn't do that previous to the refresh to version 9.
