HT750 Conversion

I see this question has surfaced in the past, and no one has ever given a concrete answer to it. Can a HT750 be converted to a HT1250?

1) Can it be done with parts, or can it be sent to the depot?
2) If so, which parts are needed, or what depot service should be requested.
3) Does anyone know of an HT750 that was ever successfully converted by the depot, and what do they charge for the service?

I recently purchased a lot of VHF low-band portables from a fire company that switched to a TRS. I’d love to have them converted and could do it myself if it only involved changing out a few parts, and a simple software conversion.

The depot will state they cannot perform the upgrade since it involves changing a model number. Whether they can do it is a matter for conversation-- there have been numerous radios that went in and came back with different model numbers!

Sure it can be done... A 1250 plug, 1250 complete front w/display, and some other things.... You'll never get the depot to knowingly do it though..

Yes, i've seen it done. I'm waiting to get my hands on a 35-50 Split HT750 so I can make it into a full-keypad camo case HT1250.

I had a customer that brought us in a 750 that had been converted, it went to the depot, and they called, told us what it was, and gave us a $400 ish estimate to make it legit.

Well, I've found out you can't simply force a 1250 codeplug into the 750. Any input on the "other things...."?

Don't forget about have a battery mounted to the circuit board to retain clock settings and whatever else, because that's yet another difference.

True, but the converted franken radio will only be unable to keep the time.

It will need to be flashed to the proper firmware .. (i.e., HT1250 firmware)

Any more info on this? Couldn't you add the battery socket for keeping time (If you even care about keeping time). I tried to re-flash an HT750 to an HT1250, but it crashed 1/2 way through. Now I have a dead radio...

Come on now, I keep seeing post about people bragging that the HT750 can be upgraded, but the posts give no details on how to do it. I keep hearing about some mystery program, etc. Can someone tell me if it can really be done? Also, are there any legal issues with doing it? I have all the Motorola Software (legal copies), and I have tried everything I can think of, and I just can't get the HT750 to take the HT1250 flash program. I've put a bigger EEPROM in, but that doesn't work, as I get a EEPRM HW ERROR at power up, probably because the new eeprom is blank. Instead of telling me it can be done, tell me HOW to do it, please?

Of course there are legal issues with it, as it cannot be done with "regular" Motorola software and requires some sort of "LAB" software. This is why people don't come right out & post step-by-step procedures for it. It's not the sort of thing that gets talked about publicly. You need to know a friend of a friend of a friend sort of thing.

Yes it can be done with proper use of the homemade labtool. Yes, there are, if you send a franken' HT1250 to Motorola, don't expect it to come back without lots of questions.
