Hello:
Can sombody clue me in on how you use a Hex Editor program to change info within a GM300 for example.
Im assuming youd read a code plug first but what is the procedure step by step with the edit program.
Actualy i found the info here on batlabs for the things that need to be changed ect but dont know what i need to do with the edit program or how to use the edit program ?
I down loaded the one from the HEX EDIT site from here on the batlabs GM300 info page.
Is this Hex Edit program Dos or Windows based and how do i use it as to getting the reading into it from the GM300 radio ?
Thank you

do you have anyone close by you that could show you, those directions on the batlabs page are pretty simple and strait forward and all there is to it so if you don't understand them it would be best if you actually had someone show you instead of try to talk you thru it on here

Hello:
Yes im thinking the deleting and entering the info is straight forward.
But i need to know how to use the edit program .
Do you read and save a code plug hen put it on a disk for the deit program or will the edit program be able to find the info directly from the GM300.
What i really need to know is what is the procedure to use the edit program with a GM300 reading ?
Thank you

I believe you're trying to blank & re-initialize the GM300 as you had posted in another thread? You do not do that with a hex editing program. It's done with a special version of Maxtrac RSS called "LAB" or "Depot" RSS. It has the capability of blanking the radio logic board & editing the eeprom directly.

Hello:
No im now interested in your way of doing it .
This was one reason i left that thread and posted new.
Im interested in how to use the edit program and how you get the GM300 info into the hex edit program.
With the hex edit program it was my understanding i could change the info so the GM300 program recognized it as a factory blank bd so i could use the GM300 program to reinitiate the logic bd as i needed it.
Thank you.

First, if you downloaded Breakpoint Software's "Hex Workshop", as I think you did, it runs under Windows. Which version(s) of Windows depends on which version of the software you downloaded.

Second, to use it, you would first read the codeplug from the radio with the appropriate RSS, and save it. I'm assuming you are not running the RSS under Windows (you shouldn't be). If you are using separate computers, you will need to save the codeplug to a floppy disk, and use the floppy to move the codeplug to your Windows machine. I personally use a machine with DOS and Windows95 dual-booted. Boot into DOS to read the codeplug, then reboot into Win95 to work on the codeplug, then reboot back into DOS to reprogram the radio. Once you get the codeplug on the Windows machine, by whatever method, you should be able to simply right-click on it and select "hex edit with Hex Workshop" from the context menu. This will open Hex Workshop and load the file.

No, the hex edit program will let you do certain things such as modify the GM300 executable & mdf files to allow out of band programming & such, but only Maxtrac LAB RSS can blank the boards & allow directly manipulating the eeprom information (referred to as "bit banging) in order to re-initiate the radio with the GM300 RSS.

Hello wavetar:
In the posting GM300 band swap.
4th post down you gave some info on some experimenting you did with some success.
In that posting you provided a link to another posting you posted with that info on making a logic bd to look like it was a blank factory bd again by bit banging so as i understood it you could now reinitiate it again with the GM300 program.
Was i reading that and understanding that corectly ?
Now that i read the postings again is this what im not getting ?
You still blank the GM300 logic bd with Maxtrac lab then you bit bang the blanked bd with the editer program to get it to be a GM300 blanked bd after doing the maxtrac lab blanking ?
Sorry but im still confused but think im getting closer to what your trying to get into my thick scull.
Thank you.

Satelite, Wavetar was referring to bit-banging with the Maxtrac Lab RSS, not a hex editor. You may, however, be able to achieve the same results with a hex editor, as I understand the codeplug is whats bit-banged anyway. The only caveat being that you may corrupt the radio, although I'm pretty sure it would be recoverable in some way or another if you do. It may be worth the attempt to try it with a hex editor and see what happens, just don't start blaming every one in sight if it does wind up corrupted. Best of luck and don't forget to post back here with your results.

Hello :
Shoot if i corupt a GM300 in the process ill use the saved code plug reading to recover it .
And everthing i do will be my own fault= certainly wouldnt blame anyone .
Not even myself as i got a pretty good clue that i could mess it up.
This is just plain interesting to me and im willing to temporairly KILL a GM300 in the learning process.
So then the Maxtrac Lab blanks the GM300 bd and also has a way of changing the GM300 bd for making it appear factory blank to allow reinitiation.
Boy was i out in left field all this time until now.
Ok then if i blank with Maxtrac lab the GM300 bd how do i get to see the string of info that wavetar has so graciously provided us to change ?
In the Maxtrac lab program what seqeunce of operation do i go through in order to do this blanking and then see the info string ?
F1 then F3 ect ???
Sorry about being a pain but im going to figure this out once and for all so i got a better idea of what everyone else is talking about and doing with all this.
Thank you for your patience.

Once you 'solve' this, how about a write-up/article?

Now you're getting it.

In the LAB RSS, from the main menu you simply hit F2 to go into service alignment. You will see "F9 - eeprom access". That is where you find & modify the required parameters to make the GM300 RSS believe the board is blank. Depending on the version of LAB, it will either show a single address at a time, or several strings at once. I prefer the version which shows several strings as it's easier to work with, but either version will do.
