On Motorola's website in their "history" area, there is a flash movie that shows an Astro rollout sometime in 1992. This sounds about right as the Jedi product line also debuted that year and most of the Astro portables I have seen have "(c) 1992 Motorola" as do most Jedi boards. Not sure of the exact date or who the first customer was though. The XTS5000 showed up sometime in mid 2002.
