I'd like to connect a UHF receiver to a Nextel with DirecTalk/MOTOTalk. The goal is to repeat some 464 Mhz bussiness traffic to my Nextel. I know there will be a delay at the beginning because of the handshaking.....but has anyone found an *inexpensive* way to do this?

I don't know of a cheap alternative. The first item that comes to mind is the Link Communications line of interoperability products. They were one of the first I had seen to interface nextels to other radio systems.
Not sure how well they work, other than the demonstrations I have seen at Dayton.

According to their current pricing, plan on spending about $1500 for the interface and cables

I've also seen the Vega IP223 from Telex interface to Nextel units. Not cheap either though.

I do know that Sytech Corp has their RIOS interop gateway that will interface with the
Nextel phones. They are not cheap, but it works fine.

Folks,
Critical RF, Inc. makes a unit for about $600 that will link the (2) together. They also publish the schematics to build your cables yourself if you are on a budget. You will need a computer of 120Mhz or greater and 2Mb of disk space to set it. up I saw the demo at IWCE last year worked well.
