Does anybody know of a company that makes an adapter that would me to plug my helicopter helmet and/or headset, which has the 4 contact Type-38 (TP 120 Plug), into an MTS2000 or XTS5000?

I tried to do the same thing awhile back. I wanted to be able to unplug the helmet from the helicopter and plug into a portable radio and have comms with the aircraft while on the ground doing a rescue. I found nothing that would work with a Motorola radio. I did find some adapters on the internet but the prices were outrageous. I even spoke to a guy at David Clark, they had nothing that would do what I wanted but they were thinking about engineering something. What I ended up doing was using Icom IC-A3 airband radios. Icom sells an adapter for their air portables that plugs right into a GA headset. I had the local avionics shop cut off the GA plugs and install the 4 pin plug for the helicopter. They charged me about $100.00 for the adapter. 50 for the Icom part, 25 for the 4 pin plug and minimal labor to put it together. They worked out very well for our application.

Thanks for the info everybody! David Clark actually makes a PTT adapter for aviation headsets to be adapted for use with portable radios.....I just need to check and see if it'll work with the helicopter headset plug. If that doesn't pan out I really like the air crew remote interface that Tiger Performance has........thanks for the link! The helicopter has just about every radio imaginable in it so I never even considered connecting my helmet into a portable and the ship's internal intercoms simultaneously.

I have one of DC C7053 portable adapters for an MTS2000 radio with the headset. The helmet plugged right in and I could hear the radio in the helmets speakers. Problem is the headset uses a dynamic mic while the helmet uses an electret and it wouldn't work. If they do have one that will work with a helmet I would be interested in it.

Well...I called David Clark in regards to their two-way portable radio adapters and was told that they are not designed to be used with any aviation type headset, helmet or audio plug, they were made strictly for ground support headset use. Bummer! So as it stands right now it looks like the remote radio interface sold by Tiger Performance is the only way to go.

Same story they told me. The Tiger looks like a nice unit.

We have two David Clark PTT that WILL work on M XTS 5000 and EFJ 5100 only problem is that you will have to disconnect from ICS then plug into the DC to talk on the radio. I can get you the model number when I get back to work on Monday

Yeah...I don't quite get it. I still work part-time for a fire department and we have David Clark headsets that connect to our MT2000's that are used by our MPO's. I guess it's not as simple as just changing the plug. Well, that's aviation for you. Anything designed for aviation has to be "specially made" which means it costs about 10x as much.

What was the deal with this adapter from Dallas Avionics?
