Need some help
I just brought my PR1500 in to my Moto Dealer for some programming changes and they told me that Motorola has released a firmware upgrade that includes the ever elusive visual scan indicator. They said they are waiting for a price from Moto on this flash upgrade.

They also said that they need to play with the new CPS they just got. They told me when I asked that it was CPS version 11.

Does anyone have info on this? New CPS?
I am not looking for the P25 upgrade - No one in my area is digital-so that upgrade would be a complete waste of $400.
I understood that a flash upgrade and a firmware upgrade were very different things, one of which involved the radio going back to the depot-which I would really like to avoid given the horror stories that I have read here of radios coming back as completely different models...

Please help!

A firmware refresh, which in Motorola's book means updating the firmware only, typically costs $75. A Flashport feature upgrade (for example the P25 upgrade you speak of) can run many hundreds, depending on the features you want added.

However, when you order a Flashport feature upgrade, you will always recieve a firmware refresh as part of the package. This is to ensure that your radio has the latest firmware to support all current Flashport options.

Neither of these proceedures requires a trip to the depot under normal circumstances. If your local dealer is halfway competent, they would place the order with Motorola (eithe refresh or upgrade), and eventually they would ship the kit to the dealer, at which point the dealer could perform the proceedure or you could. The nice thing about an Astro25 radio such as your PR1500 is that a SmartRIB is no longer required for refresh or upgrade - the OEM service cable performs these functions as well as programming and alignment.

The kit will contain media such as a CD with the latest firmware file, and an iButton authorization key that connects to the computer's parallel or USB port, that tells the CPS what function to allow (refresh or upgrade), and in the case of an upgrade, what features to add.

The current CPS release for Astro25 is indeed R11. Host/DSP firmware R11 is expected to hit the market shortly - Motorola usually releases new CPS before new firmware.

Thank you very much for helping me to understand all that. I will call them on Monday to make sure they know that I do not want the P25 upgrade... They told me that there is an update/upgrade that includes some form of visual scan indicator. This is what I'm mostly looking for. That, so far, has been my only complaint with this radio.
