the local s/o has put some new radios into service. when they transmit its real crisp and loud sounding. Its more that just a clear sound. Their voice is really crisp. They are motorola because they have MDC. Im wanting to know how they get the radios to sound like this. is it the xpand or what?

That's like saying someone is using P25 because they are digital.

Yep, it sounds like they might have X-PAND on. When I had a couple M1225's a while back I experimented with this. To a non X-PAND radio, it sounds like you described - loud and crisp. On the X-PAND side, it sounds normal, except it sorta takes the popples and scratches out of the audio to a point, and some of the audio is somewhat muffled if you listed really closely. I don't see to many people using it, but I guess it works alright for the 12.5kHz stuff it's intended for.

Ray.

i know other brands are doing mdc but this is motorola im pretty sure. I love how it sounds on a radio thats monitoring that aint useing x-pand. It sounds really good. Will my ht750 do that?

its like their voice is amplified. if they hold their mic down and not talk you van hear traffic going buy in the background. But when go start to talk the background noise its muted out somehow.

the patent on mdc is up so just because you hear it don't mean it's a motorola radio.

Ya I know. But this department is pretty much all Motorola.

I know what you mean about the X-pand. I have a few CT150's which are pretty much entry level radios that have this feature and they have the loudest/clearest audio of any of the other numerous radios I have on simplex (the only thing these are programmed for). One of the things I noticed is you can hold these face to face while TX on one and the other doesn't feedback at all, pretty meaningless other than an indication that the X-pand audio is somehow 'different'.

I have companding enabled on all our kenwood radios and the repeater. Its great. The lack of feedback alone is a real plus on the fireground. The noise reduction is really nice and the audio is crisp.
