Buy a scanner instead of the 5000 and the money you save can be used for....Well I'll keep it clean here folks..

until someday a Zen God will fully hack a 5000....

Come on guys; give him a break. His screen name is brianohsocool, not brianohsosmart.

Like everyone's said: Buy a digital trunking scanner. I know that the audio sucks, the features suck, and no one on Earth with a room temperature IQ will think that you're an undercover cop; but, look on the bright side: You can use your tax refund to earn your GED; and possibly get specialized tutoring in spelling and grammar. Or; did you lose a bet with God?

Apologies in advance.

Oh come on guys, lets all play nice now

I agree, buy a scanner But why? You will very soon realize that using a 3k/5K is very limited as a scanner. No more than 16 talkgroups to scan per zone - period. That's perfectly fine for a normal user of the TRS system, but for casual listening to the TRS system, these astro radios are just too limited. There is nothing "additional" a 5K will do vs. a good digital scanner won't do.

Not limited to 800Mhz, is VHF and UHF /\/\otorla radios being used as "scanners". Your still limited to one band and 16 channels/scan. If you live in even a reasonably populated area, more than likely all the VHF/UHF/800Mhz bands are being used. Scanners usually are the better choice in this case.

Why do people still use /\/\otorola's as "scanners", because they receive in some cases MUCH better than most scanners. Distant transmitters come in much better on dedicated single band /\/\otorola radios (and kenwoods/yaesu/vertex/etc).

Still wanna program your XTS5000 on the 800 TRS band. There was a post long ago here on how to trick the radio into not affiliating. Something about zone 1 programmed conventional, but scan TRS zone 2. That's all the details I can remember 8)

locky?

M does actually make a software application that will turn off the auto affiliation, it is handed out on a case by case type thing, to agencies, and they have to sign an agreement not to release it, but it is the genuine thing.
