How hard is this? what does it involve? I am curious if it is worth while or just go buy a model II?

Unless you are just wanting to experiment, get the model II at once. I've had my XTS3000 model one now with a display and keyboard (like the model III has) about a month stating "Self Test" in its display. Very nice, but extremely useless.
Hardware wise you'll not benefit a cheaper total. Of course a new display is always new, but then again unless you want to do it the hard way, it's simply not worth it.

You both are going to have to load in a model II S record using MTSX lab RSS

Yes, I know. Just wanted to point out that most likely one is to find a model II or III cheaper than what those upgrading parts cost on the top of the model one.
A small searching within this board might
pop up this list:
NTN8311B XTS3000 Keypad Board Kit
5105385Y19 XTS3000 LCD
0904857P43 XTS3500 Rubber Keypad
1585506D07 XTS3000 MIII Housing
0705368Z01 XTS3000 Keypad Flex
6685833D01 XTS Disassembly Tool
And
the Batdude's Guide on how to disassemble the unit might also prove to be very useful. I certainly hope I had read it before installing my SecureNet board into my XTS3k.

Once you put it all together and the radios comes on and works however i dont get the display at all. Not even self test. Could that mean the firmware needs upgraded.
