Hi,
I am curious what the differences in the radio design/hardware are between the Rugged and non Rugged versions of the 5k. I know the differences in rated specs for water resistance, but how does motorola achieve those? Is is just a case/seal difference or is there something else? Are there other differences between the two versions besides the water resistance?

Thanks!

I was under the impression R radios had a port on the back which allowed them to be pumped with an inert gas to keep the water out.

The port is only there so you can do a leak test. You pump it above ambient then watch on a pressure gauge to see if it drops which indicates a leak.
