Is there any reason why (or why not) a mobile antenna (via coax) be connected to a HT? Say I want to connect a HT1000 to a mag mount antenna to take advantage of the few dB gain. I vaguely remember someone told me that it is OK to do so but I could be wrong.

Sure it's OK. Just be sure the antenna is the proper bandwidth if your going to be transmitting and keep the coax reasonably short. Use the proper connector/adapter on the H/T (if needed) and you're all set.

Very Important... Most all Motorola HT's need some type of adapter or adapter cable.

Both guys are correct but I'm curious why one would limit their portable to the range of the mobile antenna? Other options might be to simply get a MTVA cradle which would give you both worlds with one radio. I'd also be willing to guess with the Public Safety arena going away from Jedi's and to XTS's those cradles should be getting easier to get ahold of.

Most of the Circle-M radios use an NON-skirted SMA connector, and as long as the center pin makes full contact with the adaptor, you should be good to go.

As stated previously, use ony those antennas that are designed for your bands of operation, be it a dual band antenna or a single band design.

Gain is of little concern if you can't get the signal to the antenna.
