XTS5000 DVP-XL / ADP Software Encryption

Post by Greg2561 »

I have an XTS5000 Mdl III P25 and have been trying to find a DVP-XL module for it. I was wondering about the ADP software flash upgrade. Is the ADP it's own algorithm, or can it do DVP-XL? I have several astro sabers and spectras with DVP-XL already loaded, therefore, DES and AES will not work for me. Does anyone know if these modules are still being made, and if so, what the price for them is from Motorola? I have searched everywhere for the NTN9837, or NNTN9839 with no luck, so I was wondering about buying the flash upgrade for the ADP based software if it will work.

Thanks,
Greg

well, you are in luck.

DVP-XL can still be ordered for the XTS5000.

NTN9837A ENCRYPTION DES,DESXL,DESOFB,DVPXL

of course, the price is a cool $1050.

or, for $540 and change...

NTN9839A ENCRYPTION KIT DVP XL

one thing to remember, that most people dont seem to realize - is the limitations of ADP - **SOFTWARE BASED** encryption...

once it's ENABLED (i.e. USED) - the radio will NOT ALLOW ANY OTHER HARDWARE TYPE OF ENCRYPTION TO BE USED.

so.. what does that mean?

it means - if your radio is flashed for ADP-software based crypto.... and you have a UCM with DES-XL/OFB in your radio....
once you enable the ADP-software based crypto in the codeplug.... the UCM is effectively dead.

if you want to run ADP and *NOT LOSE* the hardware based crypto you already have, i.e. OFB/XL.... you *MUST* use the HARDWARE ADP solution... which requires a KVL3000+ (appropriately flashed) to load the keys.

clear as mud?

That makes sense. So the ADP encryption is it's own algorithm and is not compatible with DVP, DES, or AES, correct?

Also, is the DVP XL just an uncommon algorithm and that's why it's so hard to find?

Thanks,

Several factors contribute to DVP's relative lack of popularity

- It is unique to Motorola, as opposed to DES and other open algorithms.

- It is "exportable" (and was, even when DES was more tightly controlled). This probably created the perception that DVP was less secure than DES.

- DVP uses a 32 bit key.

- It was not used by the US Govt, so you won't see the massive amounts of surplus DVP gear like you do with DES.

ADP is a 40-bit software based encryption and yes, different from the others. DVP was Motorola's own encryption protocol...never really too popular since the rest of the world used DES. Sorta like the Betamax of the radio encryption world.

One interesting thing to note with the XTS5000 regarding software and hardware encryption. I have an XTS5000 M3. It's flashed for Multikey, and Q667 ADP Software encryption. I have a DES-XL, DES-OFB module installed.

In CPS I enabeled hardware encryption with infinite key retention. Then, I keyloaded the radio (KVL3000), now DES-XL, -OFB works.

When I want to use the ADP software encryption, I go back into CPS and enable software encryption. This then un-greys the boxes where they keys are entered. I enter the key I want to use and program it.

If I now want to use -OFB again I just check the hardware encryption box and I'm all set, it even saves the keys. Then if I go back to ADP I just check the Software encryption box and it remembers the keys.

Not too bad.

Great, thank you guys for the help. That puts things in a much clearer perspective. I don't really prefer one algorithm over the other, it's just like I said, all my other stuff is loaded with DVP-XL. It would be a bigger hassle to change everything to DES-XL or OFB, and then try to get the keyloader for the DES.

I'll keep my eyes open, and if anyone runs across a DVP-XL module for the xts500, please let me know.

Greg

I just saw a flyer from motorola that compares the XTS radios. It says the xts1500 ( with display ) can do the ADP encryption. can anyone give me a basic overview of this so I can see what it would take to add this to our radios?

we have 30 of them, just got int. we also have a few of the high end moto Fill devices we just got in.... but not sure how or what we need for this.,

thanks

Any one seen DVP/xl modules for an XTS2500? The motorola spec sheet states it is an option but I have not been able to find a part number anywhere.

Thanks

It is an option when ordering a new radio.

Q159 ADD: XTS2500 UCM HARDWARE ENCRYPTION $150.00
REQUIRED for ALL Encryption Algorithms listed on page. Not available on Model 1 radios. If ordering this option with VHF or UHF R1 radios, you must order the 'B' main model nomenclature.
H797 ADD: DVP-XL ENCRYPTION $487.00
Q159 MUST BE ORDERED.

What about a xts2500 with theese datas - will it be possible to change the algorithm to DES-XL/OFB (with the proper kvl3000+)?:
Or is it just a software based securenet - and not a ucm module inside it?

The 2500s use a hardware UCM. You'll need to find one and add it to have XL/OFB functionality in that radio. You will lose the ability to do ADP software crypto when you activate the hardware module... if you need ADP and XL/OFB in the same radio, you'll need to find a UCM with those 3 algorithms installed, and a KVL3000+ with the matching algorithms for keyloading.
