ML910 does not see battery

My new ML910 doesn't seem to want to see the batteries. I've tried two different new batteries. The battery meter says no battery is installed, the ML User Application doesn't recognize one installed either.
I did get it to recognize the battery the first time I booted it up, but the battery stopped updating on the charge at 77%, and then when it died (I let it drain down figuring it needed a fresh charge to be seen) the computer lost all ability to see the battery.
I have a feeling this thing will be going in for warranty service less than a week after delivery, but maybe someone else has experienced the same thing and I'm overlooking something? And yes as best as I can tell the batteries are installed properly!
Ps. What is this battery calibration counter on the ML User Application? With my current battery it went from a count of 200 last night to 148 today, how the hell can the battery have been through that many calibrations already? Am I missing something here?
