HOT battery question

Good day all,
I've noticed, for the past few weeks, whenever I charge my MTS2000's battery (a Motorola battery, the high capacity, bulky one) and noticed that when finished charging, I would take the radio out, and the base of the back of the battery is super hot. I was wondering if this is normal or not ? I have the Jedi (non-Impress) 1 hour rapid charger, and this particular battery only holds a charge for about 5 hours at the most (that's not no TX, all RX). So, is it my battery, or is it normal for the battery to get very hot ? I'm figuring it's my battery, since I figure it will need replacing soon anyway, but I figured I'd ask the crew here to see what you all think. I've never noticed my batterys get this hot before.
Thanks !
Mike

Well first question, how old is the battery?

Sorry, should've posted that before
Date code on the battery is 448 AK310. Now, forgive me for forgetting, but the date code is the last two digits, or first, or I forget how to read the date code (first two digits are the week it was made, and the last two are the year, or???)
Thank you, any help would be great !
I've already put in order in for a new battery, but I just want to make sure it's not my charger.

Very generally speaking, excessive temperature of nicad battery after rapid charging implies an accomplished or incipient cell failure. In essence, this reduces the battery's internal resistance, meaning that excessive current flowed which, being unable to be consumed by the chemical reaction of charging that cell, was rejected as waste heat.

you can drop it in a battery analyzer for 24 hrs. or whatever it recommends? and you should get a report back from the battery analyzer, on what shape the battery is in. But the above posts pretty much have it covered.... just a thought...

Thanks for the fast replies guys ! I will hook my battery up to an analyzer tomorrow and have a look see
Just figured I would ask here first. I would rather do that then put the battery back on the charger and watch it blow up. lol

don't take any chances, I work for the county! If we have a battery prob. we toss it in a box and buy more! If I had to use the 10 year old battery analyzer/conditioner I would have to blow the dust off the unit.... good luck..Jim

Your date code is the first 3 digits, the first would be the year which appears to be 2004. How often has that battery been rapid charged?? I'd say the battery is on its way out.

Well, an update to my hot battery issue. I have found out what the problem is/was. Dumb dumb (meaning myself) was using a NiMH battery (WPNN4013A) on a NiCD only charger (the single rapid rate NTN1171a). That is why my battery was so hot, was because the charger and battery were incompatible. Nevertheless, the battery still has to go anyways since it's over 4 years old already. I just hope I didn't do any permanent damage to my radio or charger. I've had this radio (with the same battery and charger for about a year). What do you guys think ?

if the battery already had one foot in the grave it's got the other one in there now too

You probably didn't hurt the charger, and you almost certainly didn't hurt the radio. Just pay more attention next time! Or, buy an impres charger, so you don't have to worry about chemistry in the future.
As for the battery, yeah, it's almost certainly trash. If it was 4 years old and was being used with any sort of regularity, it was ready for the recycler anyway.

Thanks all,
Ya I did have an Impress charger, but unfortunately, I sold it along with my Astro Saber a year ago. I didn't think I would have a need for it anymore, but low and behold, I now wish I had it lol. Good thing I was only using my MTS occasionally, if I was using it as an everyday radio on that battery, and my life depended on it, I would be dead for sure. Oh well, I ended up buying a 1500Mah NiCD battery from my local dealer. Time to start using my MTS as a daily radio again ! Thanks for all the help guys !!
