is it easier to just find a X9000 or is the conversion easy?

also are their any cool mods for this setup?

it's a VHF, 8F, 100 Watt.

I own and use two SyntorX VHF units. one is a 45 watt unit and the other is 110 watt. They're performance is excellent. I hate those funky, bulky, ugly push-button control heads though.

It's my understanding that the SyntorX and SyntorX 9000 are quite a bit different from one another. I'd also like to upgrade my SyntorX to be able to use at least the digital control head from the X9000 line, but from what I've read, if it's even possible it would be more trouble than it's worth due to X9000's being available for next to nothing these days. I don't think the control cables or heads are interchangeable either.

I would also like to hear opinions from others who are familiar with these radios. There is a website dedicated to information on these, but there are so many different models, sub-models and different configurations of Syntors that anyone who's not acquainted with the series quickly becomes overwhelmed trying to read about them (at least, I was).

If you have a Syntor X 9000 personality board and common circuits board then it is just swapping in these boards using Torx drivers, then setting the deviation and compensation (sometimes the squelch threshold also).

Aside from the two above internal boards, inside the radio chassis the Syntor X and Syntor X 9000 are practically identical.

The Syntor X pushbutton heads only really work well with a small number of frequencies. Upgrading to the Syntor X 9000 control heads not only decreases the size and number of heads, it makes features like MPL and user selectable scanning practical. The Syntor X 9000 is one of the few Motorola radios that Rx scans more than 16 conventional modes (up to 128 modes).

The Syntor X or Syntor X 9000 radio is still the best low band mobile out there partly since it covers from 29 MHz to 54 Mhz non-stop.

My favorite VHF is a range 1 with the Rx preamplifier option. The one I have has the most sensitive Rx front end I have ever found in a commercial radio.

At this point in time, it's easier to buy what you need unless that are some really special reasons why you don't want to do so.

A few VHF with siren and complete ascessories for under $50.00.

There is one that has a saber MVA and what appears to be a VHF drawer on a BIN for $100.00.

Other parts are available, you need to do your shopping.

Just buy it and be happy. You tell me how it's easier or economical to convert.


Now, that having been said, if you want to pursue the conversion side, you can convert what you have by getting a personality board and common circuits board from a 800 radio and use those to convert your VHF X to X9000. You will keep the connector that connects the personality to common circuits and throw away the rest of the common circuits. The personality is all you really need.

I am not selling this equipment so go find it yourself on ebay, but here's a hint. Do a search for "syntor".

There is one with a DEK type switchbox, a siren and VHF X9000. It's on a buy-it-now for $80.00.

Make a programming cable out of the siren cable and sell the siren and the switch box and you have mostly paid for your radio.
