Greetings,

I am using my XTS5000 and XTS2500 portables in VHF conventional analog and digital. My portables are very simple flash codes with the standard: 100001-000001-8 type flashcode. I have a DES-OFB encryption module (with no key loaded) in the XTS5000 but no encryption in the XTS2500.

Now I have the concentric switch for Transmit enable/disabled but I have not been able to find out how to do it in the XTS2500. So I am wondering is their anyway to set-up the portables to emit a transmit beep when I key-up the radio so I know that the radio has keyed up?

If I recall correctly, you cannot assign TX Inhibit to the concentric switch on the 2500. I believe it has to be a menu option only.

The "key up tone" you refer to is most likely an MDC "sidetone."

In a system using MDC-based PTT-ID, and where the ID is set to broadcast at the beginning of the transmission, the user has to hesitate for 1/2 to 3/4 of a second after pressing the PTT and before speaking, else the transmission of the MDC data will cut off his initial speech. The sidetone is an option; it plays through the transmitting radio in order to cue the user to pause.

If you want an indication that you're on a Tx-capable channel, and you are free to implement an MDC PTT-ID even if your system isn't using (or decoding) IDs. Then you can implement the sidetone. Now, if you press the key and get the sidetone, you know you're transmitting.

One of the departments I'm familiar with uses Pre-ID with side tone when the radios are on the repeater, and post-ID (necessarily without the side tone) when the radios are on direct. This gives both the user and any listener an audible cue as to whether the sender is on repeat or direct.

No it is not MDC I know that for sure. I am seeing if it can be something similar like when you had a secure capable Syntor X9000 and you transmited in the clear it would beep at you real quick when you would key-up. If you had it in secure mode then it would not beep at all.

This is what I am looking to do. I wish we had trunking so I could get a key-up tone but we are not.

Sounds like you're referring to the Clear TX alert tone.

On my 5000 I can turn on the PTT chirp by turning on the alert tones. If I deselect the option, under radio wide/alert tones, it stops. I don't see an individual option to turn just this one on or off but it does list a number of others that are selectable via programming. You can also set the mute option to disable just the keypad tones or all tones. This will also turn off your PTT chirp. Of course you may need a display radio in order to do this.

The TX inhibit is programmable/selectable by the concentric switch.

I don't have, or use, the 2500 here so I can't speak for it

Even if your 2.5K/5K does not have a UCM installed, you can still select it in the CPS.

Select UCM installed, check the Clear TX alert, deselect the Periodic Key Fail alert tone.
Now the radio will beep on TX, but not over the air (as MDC would).

Now if we could replace the beep with the Talk-Permit tone............
