Astro 25 Radios ESN

I notice when I am programming my XTS5k, that in the radio information screen, it displays an Electronic Serial Number (ESN). This appears to be someting new to the Astro 25 series, when compared to the MTS2000, MCS2000, etc.

I am wondering if this ID is transmitted by the radio on certain systems (Apco 25 or Smartzone) or is it to prevent 'parts built radios ?
