I can't find a "FAIL 8E/92" fail code for any JEDI.
Are you sure it isn't FAIL 01/92 or 01/82?
FAIL 01/92 or F01/92 = FATAL > Internal EEPROM checksum error Bad internal codeplug data,
Defective microcontroller
FAIL 01/82 or F01/82 = FATAL > External EEPROM checksum error Bad external codeplug data,
Defective external EEPROM
Anything can be fixed, if it's valueable enough to you...

I have the service manual for the things. I'll give it a little closer look and if I can find anything to do with 8E/92 I'll let you know here.

I'll save you the trouble. Just checked the service manual, and that code doesn't come up. Strange........

Well, if you mean what do the 01/XX mean, the 01/ just means the error or failure was detected during power-up test mode.
Operational display codes are formatted different, for example; FAIL 002 (or F002 on top displays).
About all you can reasonably do is replace the control board. It's not a difficult task if you can find one.

If it's an 01/92 it's a bit more serious than a 01/82 error. However I'd suggest reflowing the pins on the EEPROM and give the uP a quick reflow with a liberal amount of flux to assist in the job. (need to have a hot air gun unless someone else has a better idea). If that doesn't work, well what do you have to lose labtool it and see if you can bring it back to life. If that don't work, you'll need a new controller.
