How much to update an XTS5000 Model 2 VHF to the latest firmware. Do they charge a flat rate? I am not familar with the process.

The depot FR is $395.00 IIRC. You should be able to have your local MSS do it for around $75.00.

Ok, so updating the Firmware does not effect the flash of code the radio, meaning any firmware is valid with even the simplest flashes? Thats good because the simple flash it has is what I want to keep. Will I have any issues with the local MSS guy taking care of this for me or is it like pulling teeth and a bunch of questions?

Not all shops can do the flash. If they don't deal with the high tier units all of the time, they may not want to do it. But it's not a flash, so just give them a call and see if they can, and the cost.

What rev do you have now?

I am hoping they dont mess with the flash. I just want a price on latest HOST/DSP. Currently has 3.5 now on the radio I was looking to purchase.

Yep, just call them and ask for a price on a firmware "refresh".

What you need is a software refresh and it will be $75 for the upgrade plus about $50 for labor.

Do you have to be a dealer to order it? I've ordered them from Motorola and they sent the USB dongle and CD for $75.00 per pop. I've never ordered a onesy before, but they've just asked for S/N's and model numbers for the ones that I've done, so far. I think I have 18-19 left on one dongle. It's not THE latest, but it's less than a year old. These were for VHF XTS5000 Model II's. Does anybody know if they are frequency specific? All I had to do was send one radio model and S/N info, but he told me that they would work on all of the 29 radios they sent me. They sent me 40 flashes on two dongles.

For a firmware refresh, regardless of whether you order it yourself or if a dealer orders it for you, you (or they) will recieve one or more refresh iButtons with at minimum the number of refreshes you ordered, and the media with the firmware files for the type(s) of radio(s) you intend to refresh. The upgrades are not band or control group specific, generally (e.g. an Astro Saber file works for an Astro Saber model I, II or III, bandsplit VHF, UHF, 800, etc).

In order to actually do the refresh, you'll need a 1015C rev or later SRIB (for Astro products), an an OEM flash/service cable (which may be the same as the programming cable).

And then you touch the button and pray very, very fast...

Dont forget this part! I was having the firmware lifted on one of my 3K's this past Monday at the MSS and the process FRIED the radio. The refresh worked fine on the radios before and after mine as I watched it being done, but mine was wasted, literally a brick. would not even turn on after the attempted lift.

No worries tho, as the folks at the MSS here are great people and the radio went straight in a box and off to the depot and should be back good as new soon.

I've had a couple radios over the years that have failed a firmware upgrade. The most common cause I'm aware of is a Host or DSP ROM that fails to erase properly. This has usually happened on older boards.
