Converting XTL5000 from W3 to W5

Can someone provide me an idea on how to switch from a W3 configuration to a W5 control head? I switched out to the W5 head and tried to power up but nothing happened. I then switched back to the W3 and tried to power up and it still would not work. It worked when I removed it from the car. Is it possible that by switching over to the W5 head and applying power, I locked the unit?
Any help is appreciated.

How did you switch the head? Did you change the interface board and flex and put it directly on the radio? or did you plug a W5 remote into the existing interconnect board where the w3 was previously plugged in?

I removed the flex and w3 that was connected and then connected a W5 with its flex and to the radio.

For future reference it is best to change the control head in the software BEFORE you switch head types. Stupid question, do you have the ignition sense cable attached to the back of the radio?

Depending on how your W5 head or W3 interconnect is configured you will need ignition sense on the rear connector (with the speaker connection) Did you have ignition sense installed before you made the head changes? Was your W3 head remote, or directly on the radio previously?

I got it working. It needed the ignition wire to work. Thanks!

OK; 'Tard question time...
I thought you had to do a flash upgrade to change the control head type in the XTL's. Is that not so? Or, is this a new feature of the latest SW. I've never tried, but had been told my Motorola that I had to order a flash to change control head types.

you may need an upgrade depending on what your Host firmware is.
if it's ancient, yep - you'll need an upgrade.
if not, there is a procedure of sorts built right into the help portion of CPS on how to take from Wx series to O series

The XTL5000's switch heads via the software. The firmware has to support the control head your going to, so if you have one with ancient firmware before the O series heads came out and you want to use an O series head then you'd need a firmware refresh first. Otherwise should be ok.
Of course there are hardware changes too.
