No. The XTL2500 is a more feature-rich mobile compared to the XTL1500. Think of the 1500 as an "intro-level" public safety radio.
XTL1500, 2500, 5000 are part of the Astro25 radios and are in current production. I believe they were introduced around 2006.

I've had a 1500 in my truck for a few months now. I was selling a ton of them but had never played with one, so I got a "demo".... I like this radio a lot more than I thought I would. It's very basic, but for a small department, DPW or volly officer I think Moto has a real winner. Being entry level it does have some limitations. I wish the alpha display was larger, mine doesn't have a programmable scan list (but I've been told newer versions have that option) and you'll want to order the upgraded software option.

However internally they are the same radio. The XTL series is software defined, just like the XTS series.

They were brought out in the early 1st quarter of 2007. I remember this because they cancelled the LCS2000 around August 2006 and it took almost 6 months for us to be able to by a low tier mobile.
I had the pricing in my fy 2006/2007 contract but was unable to order one until Jan or so of 2007.

The XTL is not a low tier mobile =\
Oh how nice it must be to think of a $1800 (with conventional operation ONLY) radio as "low tier".....

Well that was the best term I was able to think of at the time as I was told this version was to replace the LCS2000.
How about I use the term "limited feature" being you can't remote the head, have less charachers than the 2500/5000, etc.

My vote is for "entry level P25 radio".
