According to http://www.k2jsv.com/spectra/,when bitbanging with Spectra lab (F8, F-4), to change an a5 model number to an a9, I would change the MLM address, 6051 from 35 to 39, and command address from 35 to 39 correct? I should program (F-8) after each change and then exit out, start normal spectra rss read the radio and immediatly write a good code plug to the radio? And to change the control head type (F-8, F-5) from AF to CD, correct? I just want to make sure before I start pushing buttons. Thanks in advance.

You don't need to change the command address, as it will be overwritten once you read/write to clear the fail code.

You might, however make sure that the data in the command board corresponds to the data in the MLM board. If not, you need to write down the first couple of bytes from the command board and look for that sequence on the MLM. The command addresses are always the same, but sometimes the MLM addresses are shifted up a few.

Also, don't forget to change the moflag the allow System 9k heads.

Thanks for the reply. I used the info on the site and all went smoothly. I have 2 VHF spectras and one has obvious cap issues (fail 001) and the other does not. My next project will be getting comfy with changing caps.

Glad it worked for you. I wrote that in such a way that anyone could do it, no matter how faint of heart they would be about bitbangin a Spectra. I honestly forgot that I had that page still on there.

On the other hand... changing out caps is pretty easy. As long as you have the right ones, and don't mind spending the time it's not a bad job to do at all.
