I have a secure Saber I that has a little issue. It works perfectly fine when receiving, but there is no audio when transmitting. It's just empty sound.

Could this be a programming issue? Is Securenet disabled improperly? Or might it a hardware issue? Should I just cut my losses and get rid of it, or is there any hope of finding the problem and fixing it?

Start with the possible quick fixes. Try a speaker mic and see if you get any
transmitted audio. If the spkr/mic works then change the front shield which has
the mic element. Next, be sure you're NOT transmitting encrypted audio, which
you're likely not doing because you probably lost the key. When I used to mess
with the Secure Sabers I would always be mystified by the various securenet
combinations that are available and would play around with them until the radio
worked as it should. Also, be sure you DO have either a bypass module or a
secure module installed in the radio.

Ok. I opened up the radio and I don't belive there is any secure module in there. I don't really trust my soldering skills enough to put the jumper on there!
I have a Secure Saber 3 that's programmed as a clear radio. I don't belive it has a secure module also but it works. Could reprogramming it that way fix it?

That won't work. The secure Saber requires the encryption module or bypass module (a jumper from pin 1 to pin17) to pass the transmit audio.

Monty, a silent key now, had some information on the bypass module.

No soldering is involved in putting a bypass module jumper in a Saber.
You use a piece of #18 SOLID wire between two pointswhich are holes that
you push the wire into.

Your Saber I will not accept or recognize the Saber 3 codeplug.

Duh! I was looking at the back side of the radio. I added a jumper where it should be, and bam! It works! Thanks for helping this noob...

BTW, I looked at my Saber 3 and it does have a DES encryption module in there. But it's still programmed as a clear radio. I find that very interesting.

I'd seen a few that had nothing more than a twist tie with the ends stripped in place of a bypass module, worked fine and didn't come loose.

You can program a secure radio as a clear. You just have use a clear codeplug when you program it or when you create a new codeplug select clear. You also can program a clear as a secure to get that beep before you tx.


Im looking at a secure saber I right now that is programmed as a clear only because I had all my freqs in a clear at the time. I also have no need for encryption.
