I know almost nothing about Mototrbo, so with that, can a MotoTrbo radio be used on a Type II trunking system (in analog or digital mode)? I assume that MotoTrbo is not compatible with Astro, but can you flash the radio/does the radio ship with the H38 Smartzone feature?

The MotoTrbo is a CDMA digital radio that operates on two adjacent
6.25 kHz channels simultaneously. It has nothing in common with
IMBE/P25 setups. It is also specifically not recommended fby Motorola
for public service work. Do a search on this Board for more information
on the subject; there's a lot of it here.

OK, thanks. I didn't think astro was compatable, but I figured I'd ask. How about the Smartzone? I'll continue to look, but I haven't found a post that specifically answered that question.

Wrong. MotoTRBO is a TDMA system (time domain multiple access) not CDMA (code domain multiple access) system.

Not quite right. MotoTRBO uses a single 12.5kHz wide channel, as opposed to some systems which do indeed use 2 slaved 6.25kHz channels.

You also failed to answer his question about Smartnet Type II. I'll do so now:

Smartnet is not compatible with MotoTRBO.

The proper terms are Frequency domain multiple access, Time domain multiple access, and Code domain multiple access - that's how we folks who actually design these systems refer to them.

Maybe Wowbagger will want to write to the TIA or EIA, the FCC, or Ericsson, since they all seem to think TDMA stands for Time Division Multiple Access. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to hear a book he found on Google proves they've been doing it wrong for the last 10 years.

Reference TIA/EIA-136, FCC Report & Order 05-62-A1 and any number of Ericsson's patents.

MotoTrbo is 2-slot TDMA. Some of us would like to think it is the new P25 Phase II standard, however, no one has bribed anyone with a sufficient quantity of money yet.

Nope: the protocol between MotoTRBO and the 2 slot TDMA that Moto is proposing as the next generation P25 are different (as are Moto's 2 slot P25 and what the TIA is considering as a 2 slot TDMA for P25).

Then there's the Kenwood/Icom standard.

It all means more work for me.

And all this while, no matter what standard anyone proposes a)no one can agree on it, and b)they ALL sound like crap.

Why don't we go back to analog and be done with it? I am tired of all this digital crap.

Even my cell phone sounds worse than my old 3 watt mobile.

(and no one has mentioned yet how their TV is going to work when they live in a fringe area with snowy analog pictures once the conversion happens next year....!!)
