IRLP-Handheld Interface

I'm thinking of buying IRLP hardware, and I've been looking into radios for simplex node use. Since using a mobile radio would obviously be the easy answer, 8), I started hunting for a way to use a handheld, since I've already got my hands on an HT1000 and a couple Sabers. (I understand the issue with regards to duty cycle meltdown. I just want to know if it can be done.) So I then started to read up on relevant information. (IRLPv3 Wiring Instructions (PDF), Jedi Connector, Saber Connector, What is COS?, ...)

After a little digging, I verified that pin 6 ("Speaker Common") on the HT1000 gives 3.6v-3.9v when squelch is open, and falls below 1v when muted. So, if I understand COS correctly, then that little issue is solved for the HT1K. (If not, please let me know before I blow something up!)

I also have a few questions. First of all, is there a way to get COS on a Saber? Playing with a voltmeter hasn't yielded many positive results. Secondly, do Jedi's require a change in voltage on Option Select to use external audio and PTT, as documented for the Saber? If so, how exactly should I go about doing it? Finally, what connectors should I buy for both the Saber and HT1000, for this and other homebrew projects?

Thank you!

COS is short for Carrier Operated Switch which dates back to the tube radio days. It was a relay (switch) that was activated when the receiver had a carrier.

Today the term RUS is used and means Receiver Un-Squelched. Usually a logic level indicating the receiver is receiving a valid signal with the proper PL code detected.

Critical RF builds this. It is a private IRLP system with soft radio clients for Windows, Macintosh, Windows Mobile, and iPhone.

SiteCAST is the inexpensive box and comes with all the software included.

In the interest of open disclosure, /\/\y 2 cents works for Critical RF. Usually it's a good idea to disclose when someone's pushing their own product.
